One Island, Every Backdrop: Why International Productions Are Discovering Bali

Somewhere between a location scout’s mood board and a producer’s budget spreadsheet, a shift has been happening across Southeast Asia’s film industry. Productions that once defaulted to Singapore for post, Malaysia for tax incentives, or Thailand for tropical backdrops are increasingly looking one island further east: Bali. It isn’t a coincidence, and it isn’t only about the scenery. Bali’s rise as a production destination comes down to three things working together: a landscape that rarely requires a second location, a cost structure that stretches further than most international budgets expect, and a production ecosystem that has matured enough to support work at scale.

One Campus, Every Landscape a Production Needs

Ask a location manager what usually blows a shooting schedule, and the answer is rarely the shoot itself. It’s the drive between locations: the hours spent moving grip trucks, generators, and crew from a beach call time to a jungle scene two hours away, then back to a studio for pickups the next morning.

Bali compresses that math. Within a short drive of a single production campus, a crew can move from black sand coastline to stepped rice terraces, from a sea cave beneath a centuries-old temple to dense forest river paths, often without breaking down and rebuilding a unit base in between. At Viking Sunset Studios’ campus in Tabanan, that range sits alongside a soundproofed indoor stage, so a production can shoot an exterior beach scene in the morning and move indoors to a controlled green screen environment in the afternoon, all on the same call sheet. Fewer location moves means fewer transport days, less redundant crew time, and a schedule that holds together instead of drifting.

The Real Math Behind Lower Production Costs

The scenery gets producers curious. The budget is what closes the deal. Productions that base their Southeast Asia work out of a full-service hub like Viking Sunset Studios, rather than assembling a patchwork of vendors across borders, can see estimated savings in the range of 40 to 50 percent compared to sourcing the same production internationally. That figure isn’t a discount on quality. It’s the result of removing costs that usually pile up quietly on an international shoot: there are no import duties or freight delays on camera, lighting, or grip equipment because it’s already on-site; no premium for flying in a full crew because experienced bilingual local crew cover most departments; no third-party fixer fee stacked on top of a separate equipment house and a separate location scout, because one team handles all three; and no overseas post-production markup for basic finishing work that can be done locally.

Compared to production hubs like Singapore or Malaysia, or to bringing in crew at U.S. non-union day rates, the difference adds up fast, particularly on multi-week shoots where crew and logistics, not just location fees, make up the bulk of the budget.

A Growing Pool of Local Talent and Infrastructure

Cost savings only hold up if the work is good, and that’s the part international producers are sometimes still catching up on. Indonesia’s film crew base has grown considerably in recent years: department heads, camera operators, riggers, and production coordinators who have cut their teeth on a fast-growing local film industry and a rising volume of international co-productions.

Viking Sunset Studios’ own slate is part of that evidence. The campus has hosted The Ghost and the Gun, an Indonesia-Singapore-UK co-production, alongside local features including Semusim, Bandit, and Black Dragon. These are productions that required the same caliber of crew, equipment, and coordination that any international shoot would demand. That track record is what tells a visiting producer the infrastructure isn’t hypothetical.

Viking Sunset Studios: The Hub Making It All Possible

None of this works without a hub that actually connects it. Viking Sunset Studios operates a 26m x 25m soundproofed L-shaped green screen soundstage rising 12 meters high, powered by 60kVA and 100kVA generators, with full rigging rails and indoor crane support. It’s the kind of stage typically found in far larger production markets, built specifically for VFX-heavy and large-scale sets.

Around that stage sits everything a visiting production actually needs to function: on-site production offices, a wardrobe and makeup room, bungalow and beach villa accommodation for cast and producers, and a crew that already knows the ground, permits, village relationships, and location access included. It’s the same fixer-and-production model covered in Why You Need a Fixer for Filming in Bali, Indonesia, extended across an entire campus instead of a single service.

In-House Equipment Already Waiting on Set

This is where the cost argument stops being theoretical. Because the gear is already on the ground in Tabanan, a production doesn’t lose days or budget shipping camera packages through customs or sourcing rental houses abroad. Viking Sunset Studios’ in-house kit includes:

Cinema Camera: large format / full frame
• Arri Alexa Mini LF
• Leica Leitz M 0.8 Cinema Lens (full set)
• DJI Ronin 4D Zenmuse X9-6K

Video TX+RX / Monitoring
• Hollyland Mars 4K (TX+RX)
• Hollyland Mars M1 5.5″ Monitor (TX+RX)
• 12G-SDI Canare cable, L5.5CUHD (x2)
• High-speed 4K HDMI cable (x2)
• High and standard NP-F batteries (x2)

Camera Support
• Tilta Nucleus-M wireless hand unit, basic kit
• R/S cable 7-pin for Arri Mini & Mini LF

Sound Support
• Boom mic set
• Rode NTG4+
• Zoom H-6 handheld recorder

Rode Wireless GO II

Paired with the soundstage, locations, and crew already covered above, this depth of kit means a production doesn’t need to piece together rental agreements across several vendors just to cover one shoot day. Camera, image support, and audio all sit in a single inventory that’s ready to go from the first call sheet.
